Cultivating the Garden of Your Mind

On today's episode of the Becoming the Big Me Podcast your host Djemilah Birnie talks about cultivating the garden of your mind. Just like any seasoned gardener knows - keeping the weeds at bay can be one of the biggest challenges. However, when you stay on stop of the weeds, when you set aside time to consciously remove the weeds you can keep them from taking over your garden. The same is with your thoughts.

It can be easy to allow the negative thoughts to take root and to take over the garden of your mind. However when you take the time to sit with your thoughts and cultivate the garden of your mind to serve you on a consistent basis, the roots can never grow too deep.

Hello, hello, and welcome back to the becoming the big meat podcast. I'm your host, Jimmy Lynn Birnie and I'm so excited to chat with you guys today. So some of you guys may know that my daughter and I, we got a summer job working at this woman's garden, right down the road, just down the road from us in the morning, helping her weed because she can't do it, she has, you know, different autoimmune stuff going on. And so she just needs some help. So we have been helping her out and exchange for compost for our garden. And I was sitting there just waiting away the other morning, I just had this thought about, about how easy it is for the weeds to begin to take over. But also how easy it can be to keep the weeds at bay, when when we have conscious awareness and we set intentional time to remove those weeds. And what does that mean to thinking about was, was our thoughts and and the way that we choose to view our reality. And if we don't set conscious time with ourselves to truly get to know our, our true self, like our real selves, not just the little voices of all of the thoughts that have been put into our heads from those around us, but actually take the time to truly get to know ourselves and truly get to know like our inner being and and when you take that time, on a regular basis to get to know yourself, then it's easy to identify when something begins to grow, that doesn't belong, when something began to come up. That isn't what you are trying to cultivate in that garden in that garden of your mind and that garden of thoughts. And, and if you when you notice this, it's very easy, it's very easy for you to go in and remove this weed remove this negative thoughts that has beginning to take root in your mind and go in and reach in and take it out. It's very easy to do. It's very easy to do when you maintain and and you set regular intentional time to go through and weed your garden or to go through and weed the garden of your mind to sit and meditate to sit and be one with your thoughts to sit and wait at the garden of your mind. Now what happens though, when you neglect that garden what happens when you allow that garden to get overgrown. It is a massive chore to gather guard him back into a space of clearness and, and because you this duty is so big because there's just so many weeds as you're pulling out weeds new weeds are growing. Not only that, but these weeds. They've been growing for so long that they have established such strong and sturdy roots. And these strong and sturdy roots could be the belief systems in your mind very could be you know the justifications you have filled in your mind.

And the longer they exist the more examples you find to fit into the bucket and the stronger and stronger they hold just like the weeds in your garden. The longer you allow them to exist there, the stronger and stronger they become. And so when you go to try to pull it out, you know you're trying to go to pull out this massive lead that has been growing and developing roots for gosh Yours, maybe you go to pull this thing out. And you might notice something happens, what happens? Well, you pull off the top of the weed, right like the root end up breaking off and staying in the ground. And you know what happens, then what happens then is you have this phenomenon that happens to so many people. I'm serious, I see it all the time. And that is you think that you took care of the problem, because you don't see the problem right now. But guess what, those roots are still there. And all you have done is just taken off the top leaves, and it's not gonna be long before it begins to emerge, again, with the same sturdy, strong root system and the process goes back, again, you come you pull it off, the leaves just tear off because they're small and tender, growing from this big, sturdy, strong root ball beneath the surface, you tear off the surface level, the roots are still there, you think things are good for a moment, and then all of a sudden is back. And it's the same thing with your mind, we think that we just tear off this the top surface, and we think that we've taken care of the problem, but it keeps coming back, it keeps coming back. And that is because we have not got in the roots. And until we get all of those roots, how it's going to keep regrowing systems are going but the more time that you take just to through cardan, the more time that you take, and the more care that you take. And the more that you stay on top of it, the easier and easier it becomes because now now you don't have this massive jungle of weeds to wade through now. Now you know you have planted you have cultivated the thoughts you have cultivated the garden of your mind that you desire, the one that's going to push you forward, the one that's going to move you closer to your desires, the one that is going to get you to your goal. And then when a starts to creep in, that's gonna start to suck the nutrients that's going to start to suck the energy from you to get to your destination to get to where you're going. It's easy, it's easy, because you just see it start to grow. You just see it starting to pop up and you know that this doesn't belong and it's so easy to remove because it saw its roots are so flimsy, not so weak. You know, they are not developed. They're not sturdy, they haven't gripped hold of the soil get hold of your mind. Yeah. So that's what I was thinking about. hours, I was weeding and, and I noticed that you know, the bigger the bigger the weed, the more established it has become. the more likely it was as I tried to remove it, I was only able to remove the surface level without more intensive effort. Right. And it's the same thing with your thoughts. And when we take that time on a regular basis set that time for yourself five minutes, 10 minutes, whatever that is, whatever you can do daily to just take inventory to take an evaluation of your own thoughts are taken to see are there any weeds growing? Is there anything that maybe isn't serving you that maybe needs to be removed? Yeah. Anyways, that is Tata for now.
